It couldn't have happened before 1872-73. Bit of a clue there.

Nope. Hint: look at the N/A and the no-ones and ask yourself why. (And it is the FA Cup as opposed to the League Cup or anything else.)

CORRECT! Absolutely. My next clue was gonna be to do with Everton and Port Vale. The Toffees beat previous year's winners Man Utd in the final before being dumped out themselves by Port Vale early in the following year's competition. Maybe that would have particularly stood out.

No-one did it in 2003 or 2010 because the defending champions retained the trophy. 1999 Cup winners Man Utd famously didn't take in the 2000 competition, so they weren't available to be knocked out. 1872-73 was the first season it could have happened (the first FA Cup was contested in the 1871-72 season), but it didn't happen that time either because Wanderers, the first winners, defended their title.

I have no idea if anyone's ever eliminated the holder three years in a row. Man Utd couldn't have done it in 2000 even if they'd taken part as they were the holders. Similarly Arsenal in 2002-03 if I remember right.

khukuri, it's your go!

Excellent question...

1930 - Uruguay
1934 - Italy
1954 - Germany??? Can't remember where that was... No that was Switzerland (see 1974) so that's not one
1966 - England
1974 - Germany - definitely
1978 - Argentina
1998 - France

I count 5 before France.

Indeed it was 5

France won their first title, becoming the seventh nation to win a World Cup, and the sixth (after Uruguay, Italy, England, West Germany and Argentina) to win the tournament on home soil.
