In each round I have been trying to achieve the 'perfect' number of players in the next round - ie 2 (to the power of n).

You could just do away with the byes at the start but in the end you would have to have byes anyway because you will reach the point where you have odd numbers. I think it's better to keep having the byes in the early stages to hopefully reach the stage where you have 16 or 32 players who will all play their games.

I have also been giving preference with the byes to players that played in the previous round to try and avoid the situation where some players have played far more games than others to reach the same stage. It also means that all players have to do at least something to stay in the tournament - ie play or request the default decision.

There is one advantage to not having byes early on and that is that you would be more likely to eliminate far more players in the early stages which might lead to less rounds overall even if you do end up with byes in the latter stages.

I am open to views on which way is better, along with views on format etc, if people want this to continue beyond this season.
