Tofik Bakhramov is correct; former referee from Azerbaijan, he was the "Russian linesman" (cos Azerbaijan was part of the USSR back then) who helped give that goal to England in the 1966 World Cup final.

The judge did not own Pickles the dog. But his name is James Pickles, and hence the connection. Pickles the dog was chocked to death on his own lead while chasing a cat. The lead got caught on a fallen tree.

Your go!

Oooh..... Depends.

FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay
Wednesday, 31 August 2005
Tunbridge Wells 2-2 Littlehampton Town aet
Tunbridge Wells won 16-15 on kicks from the penalty mark
Kent League Tunbridge Wells won the shoot-out 16-15 after 40 kicks.

Namibian Cup First Round
Jan 23 2005
KK Palace 2-2 Civics
KK Palace won 17-16 on penalties
48 penalties were needed to separate KK Palace from Civics, with several players taking three penalties each. (Palace lost 3-0 in the next round)

There have been numerous other long shoot-outs in other countries' various competitions, but not as long as that.

Longest in international competition:
Copa Libertadores
May 27 1992
Newell's Old Boys and America had finished 1-1
Newell's Old Boys won 11-10 after 26 penalties

Longest between two national teams:
African Cup of Nations
Feb 4 2006
Cameroon 1-1 Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast win 12-11 on penalties
24 kicks taken

And... there was a match for the Derby's Community Cup, a competition for nine- and ten-year-old children, between Mickleover Lightning Blue Sox and Chellaston Boys, which finished 1-1, and the Blue Sox won the shootout 2-1, but not until 66 penalties had been taken.

Denis Law for Man Utd vs Hull City, Watney Cup semi-final, 1970. But United went on to win the competition, so it was all good

Brazil were unbeaten in the 1978 World Cup.

In the Group stages it all came down to goal difference in the last matches. Brazil beat Poland 3-1, which meant that Argentina need 4 clear goals to progress.

They beat Peru 6-0, meaning that Argentina were in the final and Brazil would compete for third place against Italy. Brazil won 2-1.

Correct; in the second group stage, they finished second in their group, and then went on to win that game.

The very clever among you will be able to work out the answer to my next question already. But for now, it's cmurphy's go

Between September 1972 and June 1974, Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff maintained a clean sheet, which lasted for 1142 minutes. This was brought to an end during the 1974 World Cup, but who scored against him and which country did he play for?
