Should just go with AVG Free. Though if you think Norton was good, anything you get will be an improvement

From all the free one's I've used over the years, Avira is the best imo

You have to be very careful which one you download. The trial version is not the free one, they are quite different, and the free one never pops up asking you if you want to upgrade etc (except when there is a major version change, but they have done that since version 3!)

I use nothing else but AVG. No malware scanners, spybots, firewalls etc, too many just slows your computer more than most malware does!

I also use AVG free at work to clean machines which the Corporate version of Norton has failed to protect. Thats a good enough benchmark for me.

The only time I got a virus was a few years ago and that was when I had a fully paid prescription of Norton, so have never paid for antiviris since, found that most free one's do a better job than the fully paid big boys.

^^ Agreed 100%. Its only logical at the end of the day. Freeware has to work or people just wouldn't use it.

With Free versions of Commercial packages, like AVG, Nero etc, it is even more vital that they work or nobody would buy the main products.

Fully commecial packeages, however, already have your money so...

AVG is the best freeware in my opinion.

McAfee is very good when paid for (which I've got 15 month free)

isn't that more appropriate to say about the ones you pay for?

I wouldn't say so. If a company offered a free version that sucked and didn't work, who in their right mind would trust their paid for version?

Companies use free versions as a means of advertising the premium.
