On Wednesday 18th January many sites will "go dark" in protest at the SOPA and PIPA laws which the US Government are planning to pass into law.

Sites such as Reddit, Wordpress and all English language Wikipedia pages will be taken offline for upto 24 hours, starting at midnight EST (5am UK time).

Other sites, such as Google will display a link to an article detailing it's opposition to the bill.

The firefox default startup page will be turned black and feature a "Call To Action" message.

Good to see Nick is taking part in the protest.

I'm doing my bit by not using Twitter or Facebook for 24 hours

You can still get into English Wikipedia if you disable JavaScript, or use the mobile version via your phone.

The award for the best SOPA Protest has to go to Minecraft

You can also use wikipedia if you stop it loading before the blackout occurs

Megaupload was going to get shut down sooner or later, SOPA/PIPA or not.
Take a look at this quote:

abcnews.go.com said:
The indictment alleged that megaupload.com and a shell company associated with the website, Vestor Limited, caused an estimated half-billion dollars in copyright losses and made an estimated $175 million in proceeds.

Anonymous are protesting, follow them on twitter, a group of around 5000 supposedly are flooding sites forcing them to shut down. They targeted FBI website last night, the US Government site and a lot more. All sites displayed 'The URL Cannot be reached'. It's interesting to see what they plan next - also they call it ' #opmegaupload '

I would like to correct myself on that post.
The Megaupload closure was nothing to do with SOPA nor PIPA. Megaupload has been in a law suit about this for over 2 years now and they were finally shut down yesterday.

Yep the owner of megaupload faces 20 years ; yet a man who admitted to running over a women and her 6month old daughter gets 4 years? Crazy stuff.

The hacktivists known as Anonymous have sent US Governments a warning - they have 72 hours to restore megaupload or they will shut down and target facebook/twitter/PSN/ Banks/ UN etc.

lol I'm against them as well. I just can't sympathize with criminals. This is nothing short of extortion and I hope they get caught sooner or later.
