It might be worth having a look at this site: http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/

It has listings of sound card drivers available on the net, organized by company. There is a good chance you will find what you're after here, but if not i'm sure our resident brain box (spinner) will get back to you with some more advice.

I looked on that site and couldn't find anything to do with my speakers.

They are Creative Labs Inspire P7800.

Is it something wrong with the speakers or is it the soundcard. I don't know what to look for now.

Okies. Your speakers are fine, we need to get the drivers for your soundcard.

I suspeect the lack of correct drivers has been a problem all along.

Do you have any driver disks that came with your computer? These should have drivers for your sound card on them, if its an onboard card (sockets next to USB ports) then it will be on the motherboard disk.

If you dont have the disks, can you have a look in device manager again, and try to find a name for the device, we can take it from there..

(I'm expecting it to be a realtec card)

I have a CD that came with the computer. It says Driver CD on the front of it.

I put it in but I didn't see anything related to sound card drivers.

When I look in the device manager now I cannot find the name of the device because it is uninstalled and isn't there anymore.

The different option I get when I put in the CD are:

Install Drivers

Install DirectX 8.1

Install DirectX 9

View Installation Guide

Contact PNY

Exit CD

In the device manager in Sound, Video and Game Controllers I have "legacy audio drivers"

Is that what you were looking for?

Nah, I think the CD is to do with the graphic driver (or something like that)

Is all I need just software to install the sound card driver?

Initially we need to find out what soundcard you have, presuming you are running windows xp follow these instructions:

1. Click the Start Button and then click the "Programs" folder.

2. Next, click the "Accessories" and then the "System Information" folder.

3. Within the "System Information" window, click the "+" symbol next to "Components".

4.Click "Sound Device" (or "Multimedia" and then "Sound Device") and in the right-side of the window you should be able to locate complete information about the sound card.

Once you find out this information use it to locate on this page the required driver to download:

Yep thats them! Have you installed them yet? (Install drivers on your motherboard CD includes those for an onboard sound card)

You wont have anything in sysinfo until you do.

When I click on Install Drivers on the CD I don't think it installs drivers for the sound card.

It opens up a wizard to install Nvidia Windows XP Display drivers.

When I right click on the "legacy audio drivers" and click properties it says "Manufacturer: (Standard System Device)

For the device status it says "This device is working properly"

If that's any help...

Thats obviously only a CD for your graphics card.

You should have one for the audio drivers too, but nevermind, we'll work round it!

What we have to do is try to find out which drivers you need.

Can you do what i asked before, and press windows+break, go to hardware/device manager, and take a screenshot of whats in the "sound, video and game controllers" list.

Okies.

Well, it looks like you could do with installing your graphics drivers too! The 7300 Series thats got problems there is probably a geforce card.

Right, you will have to right click the "audio device" and remove it, then reboot.

I know you've done that before, but its the quickest way to try to get the name of the device the computer tries to install.

By all means let the computer search the net for drivers, but as it didnt work before, it probably wont this time, however, make a note of the device it wants drivers for.
